“Masterful composer, renowned for his imaginative world-building and atmospheric composition… paints a rich lore through cinematic, full-bodied, and intoxicatingly eerie production… untameable imagination and a taste for the left-field… escapism at its beautifully tortured best… an immutably vast experimental-pop world.” - The Line of Best Fit
“Noted across multiple disciplines… lucid and laden in colour” - Clash
“Atmospheric and haunting, unsettling, breathtaking work... minimal, but expansive” - Cool Hunting
Sam Thomas is a British composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist (guitars, drums, keyboards) based in Margate, where he runs Sound Terrace studio. His work spans original albums, commissions for film, dance and theatre, and collaborative production work with independent artists who want to go deep.
His debut album Blind Theatre (Just Music, 2013) marked a bold introduction - an intricately layered instrumental work praised for its sweeping orchestral arrangements and evocative production, described by critics as "majestic", "hauntingly beautiful", and "a rare debut with a fully formed identity".
After years producing for emerging artists across genres, he returned with not one but two releases: Mantle (Iconoclast/Sony) - a collaboration with renowned multi-disciplinary artist Isamaya Ffrench, and Rane, a solo album featuring Lim Orion, Ösp Eldjárn and Sian O'Gorman (of NYX - electronic drone choir). Both projects further defined his sonic world - voices, design and layered atmospherics folded into something that resists easy description.
To complement Mantle, Thomas released a companion virtual instrument, The Sound of Love Lost, for Native Instruments' Kontakt player, inviting other creators in.
In 2024 Thomas introduced Gloria Untold - an AI-born alter ego. Sam Thomas' cryptic playground for a strange new world.
Across all of it, the throughline is the same: cinematic, unhurried, uncompromising. He works with a small number of artists each year through Sound Terrace studio - production and mixing handled with the same care he brings to his own records, for artists who want to make something they'll still be proud of for years to come. His next release, Harbinger, a collaborative album with London-based artist PYTKO, is forthcoming.
